Manfred Werder’s text score 2009 contains, like other of Werder’s recent scores, no words by Werder himself. It is a single sentence from the French author Francis Ponge. When I began to think about interpreting it I became interested in the way the score presented two distinct places. I ended up realising 2009 with field recordings made close to the northern and southern stretches of the M25 motorway, which runs around London. These recordings were made a year apart, on warm summer evenings in early July 2009 and 2010. The first was made by the River Lee near Enfield Lock and the second near Merstham in Surrey, close to the point at which the M25 meets the M23..
